The San Diego Viennese Waltz Club on 10 August 2003 inaugurated a regular monthly afternoon dance, Second-Sunday Waltz: two hours of casual social dancing and practice devoted to Viennese Waltz. No dress code, so dress comfortably. These informal dance sessions are on the upper, ballroom floor at Pattie Wells' Dancetime Center.

Music will be from various Viennese Waltz CDs. Requests for specific waltzes will be honored if possible.

Admission is $5 per person. Sign in and receive a name tag.

Modest free refreshments may be provided at Dancetime. Dancers also may bring their own beverages, and/or buy sodas out of the Dancetime soda machine. (No alcohol; no smoking.)

After the dance: please join us for dinner or just a snack or dessert at Pomegranate Restaurant starting around 7:00 pm. (Carpool from Dancetime if you wish.) No reservations; individual menu choices. — The dancing and dining of our Second-Sunday Waltz & Dinner are loosely connected; if you can make one but not the other, that's fine too.

The San Diego Viennese Waltz Club is an informal, non-profit organization. Monies collected beyond the floor rental paid to Dancetime will go toward refreshments, future pro instruction, future ballroom rental, and so on. Pattie Wells' flexibility with her ballroom space makes it possible for Second-Sunday Waltz to begin small and have time to grow.

BB Viennese Ball full-lengthIn case you're wondering ...

  • Why the second Sundays?  Because many calendar holidays are on or near the beginning or end of months. The second Sundays seem the freest.

  • Why 4:30 - 6:30 pm?  In the late afternoon we are not competing for Dancetime's prime hours; and we are not in conflict with other existing evening dance events.

  • Why our own dedicated time?  So we can do Viennese Waltz on a regular basis between the major balls, and in addition to any classes. We might not object to one or two non-waltz dances, but our charter for this is Viennese Waltz. We have a variety of interesting Waltz discs to play, both slow and fast.

Partners?

Come with or without a partner. Second-Sunday Waltz is a social dance, and encourages, but does not require, friendly partner alternation as generally occurs at San Diego's formal Waltz Balls — such as the San Diego Young Artists Symphony Orchestra's Viennese Ball and the San Diego Youth Symphony Orchestra's Night in Vienna.

Instruction?

These Second-Sunday Waltz hours are intended for dancing. That said, if beginners come by, hoping for an introduction to Viennese Waltz, we'll endeavor to give some strictly amateur, basic-steps instruction in a corner, without disturbing the general waltzing.

Dancers may wish to demonstrate an advanced or fancy step; or ask the more advanced waltzers for pointers. We're calling this a casual dance rather than a practice ball, but the point is to have fun dancing Viennese Waltz, maintain our skills and perhaps refine them as well.

In the future we may wish to schedule a pro instructor to give a half-hour or hour lesson, before our time slot. That involves separate payment to the instructor, so we'll see how much interest there is, and for what levels of instruction.

For any pro classes, during the class we require regular partner rotation following the Dancetime class methodology. (See Why we rotate partners! on the Dancetime website or class schedule.)
